Whistler's fall shutdown timeline: what closes, what changes, and what opens before November 20, 2026.

Whistler's summer lifts are closed, the Whistler Mountain Bike Park rides until October 12, and Whistler Blackcomb is targeting Friday, November 20, 2026, to open for winter. That leaves a 38-day gap with no lift-served mountain activity, plus two changes worth knowing: British Columbia's clocks stay put on November 1, and winter tires are now required on Highway 99.

Between those dates, the village settles into its quietest, most atmospheric weeks, well suited to long walks, festival dinners, and evenings by the fire. Here is the date-by-date fall shutdown timeline, with the Sundial Hotel as your base at the heart of Whistler Village.

Most of Whistler's summer lifts have already closed, and the bike park ends on October 12.

Whistler's Peak 2 Peak Gondola and Blackcomb Gondola closed for the summer season on September 8, 2026, and the Whistler Village Gondola followed on September 21. The Whistler Mountain Bike Park, accessed by the Fitzsimmons Express chairlift, rides until October 12, its last day of the 2026 season. Here is the full sequence as of October 1, 2026:

Whistler Village Guest Services also closes after October 12 and stays closed until winter, so it helps to settle passes and tickets online in advance. Riders finishing the season can store bikes securely and rinse off the trail at the Sundial Hotel's on-site bike wash station.

The 38 days between October 13 and November 19 belong to the village.

After the bike park closes on October 12, Whistler has 38 days, from October 13 to November 19, 2026, with no lift-served mountain activity before the target ski opening. The village, the trails, and Whistler's food and literary calendar carry the season, led by Cornucopia (November 5 to 15) and the Whistler Writers Festival (November 5 to 8).

It is a gentler Whistler, with room to linger. The multi-use trail network remains available year-round, so forest walks and Valley Trail strolls continue (Lost Lake Park's trails close to walkers once winter Nordic operations begin). The Fungus Among Us Mushroom Festival arrives on October 16 and 17 with talks, walks, and more. Cornucopia then fills 11 days with more than 100 events, from tastings and dinners to seminars, including its 30th edition gala on November 14, while the Whistler Writers Festival marks its 25th year with four days of readings and workshops. Restaurants and shops keep their own seasonal hours, so confirm before you go. For ticket timing, see our first-timer's guide to Cornucopia.

At the Sundial Hotel, the pace suits the season. Every suite has a gas fireplace and a fully-equipped kitchen for slow mornings and quiet dinners in, and the hot tub in each private hot tub suite is available 24/7 with no reservation required. The eighth-floor rooftop hot tub, with panoramic mountain views, can be reserved same day by calling the front desk from 8:00 AM.

British Columbia does not turn its clocks back on November 1, 2026.

British Columbia adopted year-round daylight saving time at UTC-7 after the March 8, 2026 clock change, so no clocks change on November 1, 2026. In Whistler, most lifts open and close 30 minutes later from opening day through January 15, with a planned operating day of 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

For skiers, the effect is a slightly later start: the planned day sits 30 minutes later than the historical schedule, and most Snow School lessons shift by the same amount until about mid-February. Visitors from Washington State should also note that, from November 1, Whistler runs an hour ahead of Washington, so adjust reservations and arrival plans accordingly.

Winter tires are required on Highway 99 from October 1 to March 31.

Winter tires are required on the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99) from October 1 to March 31, according to the Resort Municipality of Whistler. Passenger vehicles need tires with the three-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol or the M+S marking, with at least 3.5 mm of tread.

The mandatory zone begins just north of Horseshoe Bay, so it applies to the entire drive to Whistler, about two hours from Vancouver. Check DriveBC for road and weather conditions before you leave, and allow extra time as conditions change. Once you arrive, the Sundial Hotel's underground parking includes six EV charging stations, at $45 per night per vehicle plus tax.

Whistler's ski season is targeted to open on Friday, November 20, 2026, and some winter experiences start later.

Whistler's ski resort is targeting Friday, November 20, 2026, as opening day for the 2026/27 ski and ride season, subject to conditions. A new quad Showcase Chair, scheduled to open this winter, replaces the Showcase T-Bar for access to the Horstman and Blackcomb glaciers (215 acres), while public passenger bobsleigh at the Whistler Sliding Centre starts later, on December 16, 2026.

The date is a target, not a promise, so keep early plans flexible. Winter sightseeing, including the Peak 2 Peak Gondola, is scheduled to begin on opening day, and it is worth confirming hours closer to the date.

Make the most of your fall weekend in Whistler.

From Cornucopia week to opening weekend, the Sundial Hotel keeps you close to it all: a gas fireplace and fully-equipped kitchen in every suite, private hot tub suites with a hot tub available 24/7 and no reservation required, and, once the mountain opens, the Whistler Village Gondola and the Excalibur Gondola steps away.
