Fishing Update

Did you know Whistler was originally a popular fishing resort? It was fishing that drew the first tourists to Whistler, to Rainbow Lodge on Alta Lake to cast for trout. In fact; Whistler’s original name was Alta Lake Fishing Resort.

As much as Whistler has become the best place to ski in North America and the reason I moved here, fishing still has its niche in the community. We have a number of easily accessible lakes in town, Alta Lake, Green Lake, Lost Lake, Alfa Lake, Logger’s Lake and Nita Lake to name a few. And all, with the expectation of Alta and Green Lake, are stocked seasonally with Rainbow Trout. This ensures an abundance of game in our fisheries. Alta and Green Lake are the largest and are unique in that they produce sizable Cutthroat trout and Bull Trout (formally and mistakenly known as Dolly Varden). We have a fly fishing shop in Whistler cleverly named “Whistler Fly Fishing”. You can purchase everything you would need to fish our area.

Many Whistler locals spend the twilight hours from May to September on the banks of one of these lakes catching rainbows from the shore or from the public docks. Creek mouths are fantastic areas to focus on. The fish naturally hold here waiting for an easy meal to come to them. Most of these areas are easy to access and buying an area map is a good place to start. There are also guiding trips available.

From February to April, we are fortunate enough to have a winter steelhead run in the Checkamus and Squamish Rivers. These are both about a half an hour drive from Whistler. From August to November, we also see the return of 4 out of the 5 pacific salmon species, Chinook, Coho, Chum and every other year, the Pinks. During this time, it is not always the salmon we are targeting, but the large Rainbow Trout and Bull Trout that move up and down the rivers gorging on Salmon eggs, fry and flesh. This is always my favourite time to hit the water (not that I ever really leave the water anyway).
