Whistler, BC, December 2013: Whistler’s Sundial Boutique Hotel is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month. As the resort’s only owner-operated hotel, the Sundial has established itself as a distinct, high quality experience in a competitive environment dominated by international brands. A decade of delivering exemplary personalized service has secured the Sundial’s reputation as a favourite for many discerning resort visitors.
“We are excited and proud to be celebrating 10 years in business,” says hotel owner and general manager David Demers. "It means a great deal to me and my partners to have achieved success with an independent property over a decade in the ever evolving landscape of Whistler Resort. We have seen so much change, especially with smaller hotels giving way to larger chains and we are proud to say that the Sundial is recognized among Whistler’s best properties.”
The Sundial Boutique Hotel opened in December of 2003 after Demers – a Whistler local of over 25 years – and partners bought the Westbrook Hotel and invested $8.5 million into a complete rebuild and re-brand. Over the past 10 years, the Sundial has remained true to its brand providing guests with a warm, relaxed West Coast atmosphere and an attentive experience they can count on.
“As an independent boutique property, we work very hard to differentiate ourselves by offering unique and functional guest suites as well as customer service that goes above and beyond. We have amazing staff and very loyal guests to thank for our success,” adds Demers.
Over the years, the Sundial Boutique Hotel has received top accolades in online travel rankings. For its first five years, the hotel achieved a #1 ranking on Trip Advisor among Whistler hotels, culminating with a Travellers Choice Award in 2008 and 2012. Since 2008, the Sundial has been named to the Expedia Insiders’ Select® list, an annual ranking of best-reviewed hotels by Expedia consumers, three times.
The Sundial experience has much to do with the 10 years Demers has invested into the property as General Manager. He treats the hotel as if it were his own home, actively inspecting rooms for quality assurance and continuously interacting with guests. From training his staff to sourcing specific pieces to place in the hotel’s suites, Demers pays attention to detail. He greets guests personally and often spoils them with touches such as champagne and chocolates. His personal involvement in the day-to-day operations of the hotel has led to a program called “Spot the Owner” where guests receive a gift if they spot the owner and say a secret phrase to him.
For Demers, who was voted the Whistler Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year in 2006, it’s about connecting with each guest and employee. “We value the feedback our many guests provide plus we listen to all the suggestions our employees provide in making sure our guest stay is memorable. We have an amazing number of guests who return to us year after year, which is a great measurement of how a hotel’s rooms, amenities, service and staff are valued.”
The Sundial Boutique Hotel combines unique luxury, location, value and service to create Whistler Village’s best kept secret in accommodation. The hotel features 49 spacious and generously appointed one and two bedroom suites outfitted with gourmet kitchens, fireplaces and deluxe bathrooms as well as eight private hot tub suites and Whistler’s only roof top hot tub. Opened in December 2003, the Sundial was the first boutique hotel to open in Whistler and remains the only hotel owned and operated by a Whistler local. With true ski-in/ski-out access, the Sundial is ideal for friends, families or a romantic getaway. For more information or to make a reservation, visit www.sundialhotel.com or call 1.800.661.2321.
