Whistler tees up spring and summer golf; great room rates, special offers and an abundance of off-course activities

Whistler, B.C. - Whistler's four signature golf courses are set to open and - with spring accommodation rates offering unbeatable value - North America's top-rated year-round resort destination is guaranteed to offer an extraordinary mountain golf experience.

Big Sky Golf and Country Club, located in nearby picturesque Pemberton, is set to open Friday, April 17, while Whistler's three village-based courses - the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club, Nicklaus North Golf Course and the Whistler Golf Club - are scheduled to open in early May.

Big Sky Golf and Country Club, designed by Robert Cupp with the majestic Mount Currie towering 8,500 feet above the fairways, features bent grass from tee to green and Ravensdale sand bunkers to provide the finest in golf course conditioning. Big Sky also offers a unique heli-golf experience where guests are flown by chopper from Whistler through the rugged coastal landscape to the top of Mount Currie where they warm up their swing by driving eco-friendly biodegradable golf balls from the mountaintop - giving new meaning to the term "longest drive".

The first Canadian course designed by Arnold Palmer, the Whistler Golf Club is just steps away from Whistler Village and views of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains make keeping your eye on the ball difficult. Nine lakes, flowing streams and giant cedar and fir trees adorn Whistler's very first golf course which completed a $1.2 million course improvement investment prior to last season. Whistler Golf Club is home to an award-winning golf shop, Learning and Performance Centre and the recently renovated Palmer's Gallery Bar & Grill boasting one of the best patios in town.

The Nicklaus North Golf Course is located alongside the shores of Whistler's magnificent glacier-fed Green Lake. Impeccably manicured greens and distinctive bunkering are the hallmarks of this award-winning Jack Nicklaus-designed course that has played host to many of the world's greatest players including Stephen Ames, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, Fred Couples, Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus to name a few. Nicklaus North is only the second Canadian course designed by Jack Nicklaus and, of the more than 150 courses he's designed worldwide, this is the only course to which Nicklaus has been compelled to add his name.

Carved from the rugged slopes of Blackcomb Mountain, The Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club offers mountain golf at its finest - with an elevation change of over 400 feet offering unforgettable views of the Whistler valley. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course boasts natural features including exposed rock faces, mountain ledges, ravines and waterfalls, as well as the premiere golf instruction of Canada's only David Leadbetter Golf Academy

As part of Whistler's Junior Golf Program, which aims to build interest for youth and opportunities for families to enjoy the game together, junior tees are provided at each of the four signature courses. As well, each of the three village-based courses introduced the Kids Play Free program which allows youth 10-18 years of age to play free all season long if accompanied by a paying adult.

Spring time in Whistler provides the unique opportunity to combine golfing with other activities for which the all-season resort has become world famous. Those with an insatiable appetite for action can create their own version of what locals refer to as a "Whistler Triathlon" - combining three great sports in one day's outing. From May through July, visitors can enjoy a full round of golf at one of the four championship courses, glacier skiing atop Blackcomb Mountain and mountain biking in the renowned Whistler Mountain Bike Park. With the seemingly endless choice of options - from kayaking and rock climbing to white water rafting, ziplining and fly fishing …the combinations are endless. All this, plus the new PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola (with summer operations starting June 6), and a vast range of hotels, restaurants, spas and shopping gives new meaning to those seeking a truly unique 19th hole experience.
