Yoga at the Sundial
Monday, March 3, 2008
For the month of March, the Sundial Boutique Hotel has partnered with Lululemon Athletica to offer apres skiing yoga classes. Initially this idea started as a special activity to promote Women's Week (better known as Charge of the Goddess) in Whistler from March 1 - 9. The idea then snowballed into deciding to offer apres ski yoga classes not only from March 1 -9, but also every Saturday and Sunday thereafter for the entire month of March! Our first class took place this past Saturday, and it looks like we had an amazing turn out; 14 of the 20 available spots were filled up by guests of the Sundial Boutique Hotel, guests in Whistler, and probably some locals wanting to try yoga for the first time.
Why apres ski yoga?
Think of yoga as insurance against injury - it prevents injury by addressing your body's imbalances and by promoting strength and flexibilty. Yoga also assists in focusing on the breath; which can help skiers manage any fears or relax a tense and stressed body. Concentration on the breath, learning to transition movements and becoming more aware of your body and your balance can help any level of skier improve their ability and reduce the risk of injury. Me, being the novice skier I am, think I have just convinced myself to go try out this afternoon's yoga class. Who can't use an hour of relaxation? This being said, it has been YEARS since I have attempted yoga, so I am a little nervous. However, I have been assured by our Lululemon instructors that all ability levels are welcome, and that they are well trained and able to assist those with little or no yoga experience. Wish me luck!
